Okay, so, I wanted to see what this whole Carnival thing in Brazil was all about. You know, the one with all the crazy costumes and dancing. It sounded like a blast, so I figured, why not go and check it out for myself? Here’s how it went down.

Decided to Go
First, I had to actually, you know, decide to go. It wasn’t exactly a spur-of-the-moment thing. This Carnival is a big deal, happens every year, and it’s like the hottest time to visit Brazil. So, I did some quick reading online. Turns out, this is a huge annual party that happens right before Ash Wednesday. Alright, I’m in.
Booked Everything
This was probably the most boring part, but super important. I learned the hard way that you can’t just show up to Brazil during Carnival and expect to find a place to crash. Nope. So, I went online and booked a flight and a hotel. Did this way in advance, like everyone recommended. Oh, and I made sure to get travel insurance, because, you know, better safe than sorry.
Got My Stuff Together
Next, I had to pack. I kept it pretty simple: light clothes, because it’s hot, some comfy shoes, because I figured I’d be walking a lot, and of course, my camera. I also made sure I had all the right travel docs – passport, visa if you need one, that kind of stuff. Also, got some Brazilian currency exchanged. Using cards is cool and all, but cash is king in some places.
Headed to Rio
Carnival happens all over Brazil, but Rio de Janeiro is like the main event. So, that’s where I headed. The flight was long, but hey, worth it. When I got there, the city was already buzzing. Music, people everywhere, and just a crazy energy in the air.
Hit the Streets
I spent the next few days just soaking it all in. I walked around, checked out the street parties, which are called “blocos.” They’re basically just huge crowds following a band, dancing and having a good time. I even tried to learn some samba moves. Let’s just say I’m no pro, but it was fun!

Saw the Sambadrome
This was the highlight. The Sambadrome is where the big samba schools have their competition. It’s like a huge parade with the most amazing costumes and floats you’ve ever seen. I managed to get tickets – again, book in advance! – and it was totally worth it. The energy, the colors, the music… it was insane.
Ate All the Food
I’m a big foodie, so I made sure to try all the local dishes. Street food was my go-to. Lots of grilled meats, these things called “coxinha” which are like fried chicken dumplings, and of course, caipirinhas, the national cocktail. So good.
Made Some Friends
One of the best parts was meeting people. Locals and other tourists, everyone was in a good mood and just there to have a good time. I even ended up joining a few groups to go to different blocos and parties. It’s easy to make friends when everyone’s just having a blast.
Wrapped It Up
After a few days of non-stop partying, I was pretty beat. But in a good way. I headed back home with a ton of photos, some awesome memories, and a slight hangover. Would I do it again? Absolutely. If you ever get the chance to go to Carnival in Brazil, do it. Just remember to plan ahead, and get ready for the time of your life!
