Okay, so today I decided to check out the Muralles de Girona, the old city walls in Girona. It was something I’d been meaning to do for ages, and the weather was perfect, so I just went for it.

Getting Started

First things first, I figured out how to get there. I looked up the best way to reach the walls and found that you could pretty much start walking them from various points in the old town. I decided to start near the Girona Cathedral, which is impressive in itself!

The Walk Itself

I started climbing the steps – and let me tell you, there are a lot of steps! It’s a bit of a workout, especially on a warm day, but so worth it. As I got higher, the views started opening up. You could see the whole city, the Onyar River with its colorful houses, and even the mountains in the distance.

  • The views: Seriously, the views are amazing. I stopped so many times just to take it all in.
  • The walls themselves: They’re really well-preserved. You can imagine knights and soldiers walking along them centuries ago.
  • The towers:You can stop and even climb up several towers!
  • The little details: I noticed things like old stone carvings and little plants growing out of the cracks in the walls. It felt like stepping back in time.

I walked along a good portion of the walls, taking my time and just enjoying the experience. I packed water and a snack, because the walk took longer than I thought. There are some shaded areas, but also plenty of sunny spots, so a hat and sunscreen are a good idea.

Finishing Up

I eventually made my way down near the Jardins dels Alemanys (German Gardens), which are also worth a quick look. I was pretty tired by then, but in a good way. It felt like I’d really accomplished something and seen a unique side of Girona.

Overall, I’d totally recommend walking the Muralles de Girona. It’s a great way to get some exercise, see some incredible views, and experience a bit of history. Just remember to wear comfy shoes and bring water!
