Eco-friendly resorts: Planning your sustainable holiday.

Okay, folks, let’s dive into my recent adventure with eco-friendly resorts. I’ve always been a bit of a nature nut, so the idea of a vacation that doesn’t wreck the planet really appeals to me.

Eco-friendly resorts: Planning your sustainable holiday.

I started by just, you know, Googling around. “Eco-friendly resorts,” “sustainable travel,” that sort of thing. I was hit with a ton of options, which was both exciting and totally overwhelming.

So, I narrowed it down. I decided I wanted to go somewhere tropical, because, well, beaches! I also looked for places that had clear information about what made them “eco-friendly.” Like, were they just saying it, or were they actually doing stuff?

Digging Deeper

This is where things got interesting. I started checking out individual resort websites. I looked for things like:

  • Energy use: Were they using solar power? Were they trying to conserve energy in other ways?
  • Water conservation: Did they have low-flow toilets? Were they reusing water for things like landscaping?
  • Waste management: Were they composting? Recycling? Trying to reduce plastic use?
  • Community involvement: Were they supporting the local community? Employing local people?

Honestly, it was a bit of a slog. Some websites were super clear and detailed, others were pretty vague. I made a spreadsheet (yeah, I’m that person) to keep track of everything. I noted down the good and the bad for each place.

Making the Choice

After all that research, I finally picked a resort in Costa Rica. It ticked all the boxes: solar power, rainwater harvesting, a huge focus on reducing waste, and a program that supported local schools. Plus, it looked absolutely gorgeous.

The trip itself was amazing. I saw firsthand how they were putting their eco-friendly promises into practice. They had refillable water stations everywhere, the food was locally sourced, and they even had a little garden where they grew some of their own produce. I talked with some of the staff, and they were all super passionate about sustainability.

I came back feeling refreshed, relaxed, and like I’d actually made a (small) positive impact. It definitely took some extra effort to find the right place, but it was totally worth it. I’d 100% recommend doing your homework before you book any “eco-friendly” trip – it makes all the difference!
