Okay, so the other day, I decided to finally get some decent family photos. We’ve never really done a proper photoshoot, so I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” I’m no professional, but hey, how hard could it be, right?

First things first, I needed to find some inspiration. So, I scrolled through tons of pictures online, looking at different family poses. I quickly realized there’s a lot more to it than just saying “cheese!”

Getting Everyone Together

The real challenge? Getting my family on board. My kids were being, well, kids, and my husband was a bit skeptical. I eventually bribed the kids with ice cream and convinced my husband it would be “fun.”

The Actual Photoshoot

We picked a local park as our location. Nice scenery, good lighting – seemed perfect. Then, I tried to remember all those poses I saw online. Here’s what I tried, and here’s how it worked out.

  • The Classic “Everyone Smile”: This one’s a staple, but it’s tougher than it looks. Getting everyone to smile naturally at the same time? Yeah, good luck with that. We got a few decent shots, but a lot of them were, um, interesting.
  • The “Candid” Shots:I attempted to capture some “candid” moments, like the kids playing or us just walking around. I set the camera for sports mode, that seems work. These turned out to be some of my favorites! They felt more real and less forced.
  • The “Sitting Down” Pose: We found a nice bench and tried to arrange ourselves in a way that looked relaxed and natural. My son’s shirt was half-untucked, so I fixed that. The photos are kind of cute.
  • The “Walking Towards the Camera” Pose: This one was surprisingly fun! We just walked towards the camera, holding hands and laughing. It felt a bit awkward at first, but the photos look pretty good.
  • The “Kids on Shoulders/Back” Pose: I saw this one online and thought it would be adorable. My kids are getting a little big for this, but we managed to pull it off for a few shots. My back definitely felt it afterward, though!

The Aftermath

After about an hour, everyone was getting tired and cranky (including me!). We called it quits and headed home. I uploaded all the photos to my computer and started going through them.

The end, I did got some perfect family photos.

It wasn’t perfect, but we had some laughs, and I actually ended up with some photos I really love. It was definitely a learning experience, and next time, I’ll be a little more prepared. Maybe I’ll even bring some snacks to keep the kids happy!
