Okay, so I wanted to try something new with my art, and I’ve always been a little intimidated by figure drawing, especially nudes. It feels like a whole different level of skill, you know? But I figured, what the heck, let’s give it a shot. I found some reference photos online – nothing too crazy, just some basic poses.

First, I grabbed my sketchbook and a few pencils – a 2B and a 4B, just to have some options for shading. I started with really light, loose lines, just trying to get the overall shape and proportions down. I wasn’t even thinking about details at this point, it was all about the gesture and the flow of the body.

I messed up. A lot. Seriously, the first few attempts looked like stick figures drawn by a toddler. But I kept going, erasing and redrawing, trying to get the angles and curves right. It’s amazing how much you have to adjust, even tiny things, to make it look even remotely human.

My “Aha!” Moment

  • Focus on the big shapes first. Don’t get bogged down in details.
  • Pay attention to the negative space. The space around the body is just as important as the body itself.
  • Don’t be afraid to erase. Seriously, my eraser got a workout.

After a few tries, I started to get the hang of it. I focused on capturing the weight and balance of the pose. For example if you don’t draw the foot correctly, the figure looks like is floating. I also started to add some basic shading, just to give the figures some dimension. Nothing fancy, just enough to suggest the curves and contours of the body.

I spent a couple of hours on this, just practicing different poses. Some were standing, some were sitting, some were lying down. I tried to vary the angles and perspectives, too, just to challenge myself.

By the end, I was actually pretty pleased with how far I’d come. My drawings weren’t perfect, not by a long shot, but they were definitely better than when I started. And most importantly, I felt like I’d learned something. I realized, that drawing nudes isn’t about being perfect. It’s about observing, understanding, and capturing the essence of the human form.

I’m definitely going to keep practicing this. It’s a great way to improve my overall drawing skills, and it’s actually kind of fun, once you get over the initial awkwardness. So, yeah, that’s my little adventure into the world of nude figure drawing. Not as scary as I thought it would be, and definitely worth the effort!
