Okay, so today I decided to dive into something a little different – creating some fan art mashup of the Wicked Witch of the West and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. I’ve always loved that movie, and I thought it’d be fun to play around with their iconic looks.

Getting Started
First, I gathered some reference images. I googled pictures of both characters, trying to find some good poses and close-ups of their outfits. I wanted to make sure I got the details right, like the Witch’s hat and Dorothy’s blue gingham dress.
The Sketching Phase
Next, I opened up my favorite drawing program. I usually start with a really rough sketch, just to get the basic shapes and composition down. I played around with a few different ideas, like maybe having them facing each other, or maybe having Dorothy looking scared and the Witch looking all menacing.
- Rough sketch of the characters’ poses.
- Experimenting with composition.
- Adding basic details like the hat and dress.
Adding Details and Refining
Once I was happy with the basic sketch, I started refining it. I added more details, like the Witch’s long nose and pointy chin, and Dorothy’s braids. I also started thinking about the background. I thought it would be cool to have the yellow brick road in there somewhere, maybe with the Emerald City in the distance.
This part took the longest, because I kept going back and forth, erasing things and redrawing them until I was satisfied. I find getting the expressions is hard.
The Final Touches
Finally, after what my friend calls, fussing with it, I added some shading and highlights to give the drawing more depth. I also added some color, using mostly greens and blues to match the characters’ outfits and the overall mood of the scene.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! It’s not perfect, but it was a fun little project, and I learned a few things along the way. Maybe next time I’ll try drawing the Cowardly Lion!
