Okay, so I’ve been planning this big backpacking trip through Southeast Asia, and I knew budgeting would be a HUGE headache. I mean, keeping track of every little expense in different currencies? No thanks. So, I did some digging and figured out a pretty decent system to track my trip budget in real-time. I’ll walk you through what I did.

Finding the Right Tool
First things first, I needed an app. I tried a few different ones, some were too complicated, some were just plain ugly. I ended up settling on a simple one.
Setting Up My Budget
Once I picked my app, I started by creating a new “trip.” I gave it a name – “Southeast Asia Adventure” – pretty original, I know. Then came the important part: setting my overall budget. I did some research on average daily costs in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, and came up with a total figure. I punched that into the app.
Adding in Currencies
This was key. The app allowed me to add multiple currencies. I added Thai Baht, Vietnamese Dong, and Cambodian Riel. I made it to set my home currency as USD, made things so much easier for conversions.
Daily Tracking – The Grind
Now for the daily grind. Every time I spent money, I opened the app and logged it. Whether it was a $2 Pad Thai or a $10 hostel bed, I put it in.
- Choose the right category (food, accommodation, transport, etc.).
- Enter the amount in the local currency.
- The app automatically converted it to USD based on the current exchange rate. Pretty neat!
Checking Progress
The app has this cool dashboard that shows me how much I’ve spent overall, how much I have left, and my average daily spending. It also breaks it down by category, so I can see if I’m blowing all my cash on fancy cocktails (spoiler alert: sometimes I am). The progress bar is really good to see.

The Result?
Honestly, it’s been a lifesaver. I can enjoy my trip without constantly worrying about going over budget. I can see in real-time if I need to slow down on the Chang beers or treat myself to a nice massage. It’s all about balance, right? Plus, having all the expenses recorded means I’ll have a pretty accurate picture of how much the trip actually cost, which will be super helpful for planning future adventures.
