Okay, so I’ve always wanted to go to Africa, and Uganda just seemed like this magical, unexplored place (at least to me!). So, I finally bit the bullet and booked a trip. Here’s how it all went down.

The Planning Stage (aka The “Oh My God, What Have I Done?” Stage)
First things first, I started with some serious Googling. I mean, I knew nothing about Uganda. I looked at a bunch of different travel blogs and websites, trying to get a feel for the place.
I knew that, I have to get a visa. Checked the Ugandan embassy website for my country and got all the paperwork sorted. It wasn’t too bad, honestly, just a bit of a waiting game.
Then I started to think and search about vaccinations. Talked to my doctor, got a bunch of shots. Yellow fever is a must, and I got a few others just to be safe. Better safe than sorry, right?
I booked the major flights – getting there and getting back. Finding the in-country transport was a whole other adventure! And, of course, accommodations. I mixed it up – some nicer hotels, some more budget-friendly guesthouses, even a night in a tent!
Boots on the Ground (aka The “Wow, This Is Really Happening!” Stage)
When arrived in Entebbe (that’s where the main airport is),I got to go through customs. Smooth sailing.

From that moment, met my guide! I decided to go with a local tour company for a chunk of the trip, and it was the BEST decision. Having someone who knows the area, the language, the customs… game changer.
- Gorilla Trekking: This was the big one, the thing I was most excited about. It was… unbelievable. Hiking through the jungle, finally seeing these massive, gentle creatures… It’s hard to describe. Humbling, for sure.
- Chimpanzee Tracking:Did this too! So cool to see them swinging through the trees. They’re so fast!
- Safari Drives: Saw lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, the whole shebang. It was like being in a nature documentary.
- Boat Trips: Went on a boat trip on the Nile River and Lake Bunyonyi. Gorgeous scenery, saw tons of birds, and even some hippos!
Eating All the Things (aka The “My Stomach Is a Champion” Stage)
I ate SO much good food. I’m not even kidding, I think I gained five pounds. I tried everything I could, street food, restaurant food, you name it.
- Rolex: Not the watch! It’s a rolled chapati with eggs, veggies, and sometimes meat. SO good, and super cheap.
- Matooke: Mashed plantains, kind of like mashed potatoes, but… plantain-y. It’s a staple.
- Luwombo: This is like a stew cooked in banana leaves. Delicious!
The Homestretch (aka The “I Don’t Want to Leave!” Stage)
Eventually, It’s time to head back to the airport. I’m tired, I’m sweaty, my clothes are probably a bit smelly… but I’m so happy.
Going through customs on the way out. Easy peasy.
Now, Reflect on the trip during the long flight home. Uganda, you were amazing. Would I go back? In a heartbeat.

My biggest takeaway? Go with an open mind, be prepared to be amazed, and don’t be afraid to try new things. And definitely, definitely, bring good bug spray.
