The Reality Check Hits Hard
First thing I did? Googled stuff. Seriously, just typed random questions until my eyes hurt. Found the official US government travel website eventually – gotta use that. Read like fifty pages of instructions. So many rules. Why so complicated?
Realized step one was this monster called the DS-160 form. Sounds official. Looks intimidating. Basically, your whole life story online. Had to gather all my details first:
- Passport Info: Obvious, right? Still had to dig it out.
- Travel Plans: Seriously? Just visiting! Made up rough dates and a hotel name from Booking website.
- Work History: Like ten years back. Who remembers all that?
- Security Questions: “Ever been a terrorist?” No mate, obviously.
Spent a whole Sunday afternoon on that silly DS-160. Kept getting timed out. Almost threw the laptop twice. You get a confirmation page and number when you FINALLY finish. Print that sucker. Seriously, PRINT IT.
Booking the Interview
Thought the hard bit was over. Nope. Now I had to book an actual interview at the US Embassy in London. Paid the MRV fee first. Cost £149. Just to apply! Ouch. Got a receipt number.
Logged into the embassy booking system. Available slots? Forget it. Weeks out. Nothing good. Checked obsessively for days like checking social media. Finally grabbed a slot. Massive sense of relief mixed with “bloody expensive just for a chat!”
The Scary Interview Day
Got to London early. Queued forever outside the embassy. Security was airport-level strict. No phones, nothing. Just me and my folder of documents.

- “Why going to USA?” Vacation, see the sights, you know?
- “How long staying?” Two weeks.
- “What do you do in UK?” Told him my boring job title.
Searched my passport briefly. Took my fingerprints electronically. Then he said “Approved.” Didn’t even ask to see half the crap I brought! Took maybe five minutes. All that fuss over £149 and a scary building for a five-minute chat.
The Cost of Panic
Thought the £149 was it? Ha!

- Shipping Fee: Another £20 or so to get your passport sent back via courier. Mandatory rip-off.
- Flexible Flights: Booked a refundable ticket just in case. Extra £150 down the drain, probably.
- Travel to London: Train ticket wasn’t cheap either.
- Random Paperwork: Printing costs add up!
Grand total? Way over £300 once you factor everything in. All to prove I wasn’t gonna overstay my welcome in the States. Felt relieved getting the passport back with the visa sticker inside a week later, but damn, my wallet felt the sting.
So yeah, that was my little adventure. Loads of paperwork, costs way more than you first think, queueing like a zombie, and a surprisingly quick interview. Wouldn’t call it fun, but you gotta do it.
