Traveling overseas? Quick tips to secure your digital information on trips

Alright folks, here’s how I actually prepped my digital life before my last big trip overseas. Total mess before, figured it out the hard way, now I share so you don’t sweat it like I did.

Traveling overseas? Quick tips to secure your digital information on trips

The “Oh Crap” Moment Before Takeoff

So, packing for Japan, right? Suddenly realized: my phone! My laptop! All my stuff! What if I lose it? What if someone grabs it at the airport? Panic city. Knew I had to lock things down, fast.

First thing I did? Grabbed my main devices – the phone glued to my hand and the laptop I work on. Started going through them like a detective hunting clues.

Phone First – Nuke the Risky Stuff

Took my phone and started digging through the apps:

  • Opened my banking apps. Found the option to log out of every single session right now. No way was my bank account staying logged in while I was asleep on a plane.
  • Next up, PayPal, Venmo, anything with cash involved – same drill. Hit log out everywhere. Felt weirdly satisfying.
  • Social media? Yeah, those stay logged in usually. But Facebook, Insta… went into settings on each one and kicked off any other active sessions. Just me logging in from now on.

Turned off autofill for passwords too. Yeah, super annoying typing them in later, but better than someone snooping grabbing all my logins from my stolen phone.

Laptop Lockdown – More Than Just Shutting the Lid

Then fired up the laptop. Not just closing it, needed real security.

  • Made 100% sure my laptop password was a strong one, not my dog’s name. Added a PIN just for good measure. Pain in the butt? Yep. Necessary? Absolutely.
  • The big one: encrypted the whole darn drive. Took a while, laptop ran hot, but everything became unreadable junk without the password. Even if someone physically yanks the drive out, useless.
  • Double-checked backups too. Plugged in my external hard drive, ran Time Machine (I use Mac, you do you), made sure all photos/docs were safe at home, not just floating on the laptop. Did NOT want to lose vacation pics.

Public Wi-Fi? No Thanks! My Own Bubble Please.

Knew I’d crave connection at airports and cafes. Also knew hotel Wi-Fi is basically screaming your data into a crowded room.

  • Installed a 加速器 on both phone and laptop. A paid one. Used that for everything outside my hotel room. Banking? Email? Personal stuff? Always through the 加速器 tunnel. Felt safer browsing.
  • Airports especially – always connected to the 加速器 before opening anything important. Made the crappy coffee shop connections feel a bit less sketchy.

Mission Complete: Sleep Soundly

Did all this take maybe an hour? Yeah. Was it slightly annoying? Sure. But landing in Tokyo? Zero stress about my digital stuff. Lost my phone? Laptop stolen? Horrible, but at least they couldn’t drain my bank account or see my embarrassing photos.

Honestly, felt dumb for not doing this earlier on trips. Simple steps, huge peace of mind. Now it’s just my routine. You should make it yours too.
